Modem Setup

In the Modem Setup window, all connected and configured modems are listed under the Modem Description column. Also shown is whether Panorama can use them, and for what types of communication.

To get to the Modem Setup window, select Modem Setup from the Communications button in the Navigator or the Navbar.

Following the Modem Descriptions column, under the Control column, specify whether the modem is for reporting (incoming), polling (outgoing), or both.

In the Manual Poll column, specify which modems will be used for Manual Polls, and finally, specify the Location Name. (For information on creating a Location name, use the Windows help for the Modems Control Panel.)

When a dial-out prefix is needed, as when accessing an outside line, make these changes in the WindowsÆ Modems Control Panel. Choose the Protel modem(s), and under the General tab, click the Dialing Properties button. Enter the number needed in the appropriate fields. Enter a comma for a one-second pause, if needed.

Keep in mind that if all of the modems are configured for polling (outgoing or both), and the computer is using all of them to do this, then reports from phones cannot come in. If a phone is expected to report at a time when all of the modems will be in use, set one of the modems for incoming only, so that the phone will have a means to report to the computer.

In Protel tests, WindowsÆ was configured and stable with as many as 36 modems, using DigiÆ AccelePort Xem boards. Future updates of the WindowsÆ operating system may allow even greater numbers of modems to be used.
