Set up Panorama Dialing

Create a Location

There are three places that need to be adjusted to accommodate different dialing needs. The Modems Control Panel, in Windows, is one of those places. Click the Dialing Properties button in this control panel. Here, create a new location record by clicking the New button. Enter the name for the location and click OK. Enter the area code of your computer, and select a country from the pull-down list. Now, open the Modem Setup window in Panorama. In the Line Location ID field, select the name that was entered for the location in the Modems Control Panel. Do this for each Protel modem listed.

Outside Line

If your computer needs to dial a number to get an outside line (typically a 9), open the Dialing Properties window from the Modems control panel. Enter that number into the next two fields ñ the first for making a local call, the second for making a long distance call. The fields can hold up to 29 digits. Use a comma for a pause of one second, when needed. Panorama will dial the first field before dialing a phone for polling if the Dial Pattern in the Assignments tab of the Phone window is set to either 7 digits or 10 digits; Panorama will dial the second field before dialing a phone for polling if the Dial Pattern in the Assignments tab of the Phone window is set to 1+7 digits or 1+10 digits.

Long Distance Routing

If a calling card or other kind of routing will be used on ALL outgoing polls, check the Dial using Calling Card checkbox in the Modems control panel, and configure this using Windows help. Use a comma for a pause of one second, when needed. If, however, some phones will use different cards or other routing means, use the Dial Prefix pull-down menu in the Assignments tab of the Phone window for these phones, and the control panel setting for the rest of them, because the setting in the Phone window will override the setting in Modem control panel, on a phone-by-phone basis. If there isnít a large enough majority to justify configuring the Modems control panel, just use the Dial Prefix field. Note: the Dial Prefix field will only be used with 1+7 digits and 1+10 digits selected in the Dial Pattern pull-down menu. The other selections are intended for local dialing, when no routing would be necessary.

Call Waiting

Lastly, the modem lines that are being used for polling and reporting should be dedicated lines, and therefore should not have call waiting on them. If they do, then call waiting should be disabled, to prevent an incoming call from interrupting a communication session. Disable call waiting universally (for all phones) by opening the Modems control panel in Windows. Place a check in the box before the sentence ìThis location has call waiting.î In the pull-down menu following that, select the digits that need to be dialed to disable call waiting, or fill in the field if the digits you need are not listed. Click Ok in the two windows.
